My nephew is seriously alcoholic and refuses to enter rehab or attend AA. He’s wrecked 4 cars (flipped 2) but (thank God) never seriously injured self or others. He’s been charged numerous times but somehow only convicted ONCE!!! No matter how seriously he commits not to, he just keeps getting behind the wheel drunk… since once intoxicated he has no rational decision-making ability. He swears to himself that he won’t do it, but alas, then he gets drunk again. What I canNOT understand is why it’s been so hard to see any action from legal authorities. We are truly in danger out there folks!!!
I am SO hoping there might be someone out there in law enforcement who can shed some light.

the DUI laws that we have now are strong enough when they are enforced.

it appears that no matter what the law is, your nephew intends to break it. i dont see how he is legally driving with his record.

something doesnt add up with your story. 4 wrecks while intoxicated and only 1 conviction? surely he no longer has insurance, that in itself is illegal. you cant finance a car without proof of insurance.

most people learn their lesson when they get in trouble for DUI. to strengthen laws to punish the extreme offenders, can ruin the lives of some offenders who really dont deserve it.

example- someone with no record, goes to a wedding, has a few drinks. not driving erratically. gets stopped in roadblock. is just at limit. he gets night in jail, several thousand dollars of fines , loses liscence for several months, has to attend DUI school, has to get expensive insurance (about 5X normal cost) for 5 years, gets police record, name in newspaper, possibly loses job(definitely loses job, if driving is required), has DUI conviction on record for life. thats just for 1st offense. many violent crimes do not have this strict punishment.

I have always thought that EVERY car manufacturer should be required to equip their vehicles with those breathalizer starter disablers. Before you can start your vehicle, you must breath into
the device which would run an alcohol test. If it is at the limit or above, the vehicle will not start.

I agree with you. I believe that after the first offense, you should be charged with attempted murder, depending on the amount found in your system. Since driving impaired, you could kill someone. Then sent to a mental facility, to find the core reason for your inability to understand what your impacted has on others.
