Why do I feel “intoxicated” sometimes even though I quit drinking a month ago?

Question by joejack : Why do I feel “intoxicated” sometimes even though I quit drinking a month ago? Not necessarily drunk or buzzed, but “stunned”.

Like this morning, trying to get to a job site while picking up supplies along the way. It was like I was conspiring against myself; missing exits, thinking a Walmart was a Home Depot and driving there only realizing it when I pulled into the parking lot and forgetting tools at home that I needed on the job.

Is this normal after quiting alcohol? Best answer:

I have heard that a real alcoholic is built a little different than most people. They are just a half a bubble off – and the alcohol always helped to keep them functioning. But once they quit, then they go back to being sort of “unhandy” – and perhaps this takes in being “stunned” or confused.

There’s a great little book – a drunk from AA gave it to me once – “Under the Influence”. There’s a zillion copies out there used – so buy it used – it’s cheap – and it’s such an interesting read. Get it on Amazon.com. I rent houses, and I’ve rented to any number of alcoholics who’ve quit – so they tell me stories about their days as drunks. It’s quite interesting. There is a HUGE adjustment where it comes to not drinking – but it’s the best step you can take.
