Earlier this year, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) released preliminary findings of their annual first quarter highway and traffic fatality statistics, showing a 19 percent increase in traffic fatalities from Jan.1 through Apr. 30, 2012.The CDOT report shows a total of 127 traffic deaths in the first quarter this year compared to the 103 traffic deaths during the same time period in 2011.

If this trend in traffic fatalities continues throughout 2012, the increase in this year’s total traffic fatalities will break a four-year consecutive decrease in lowering traffic deaths in Colorado. Law enforcement and safety officials throughout the state are concerned about the findings and are forcefully taking action.

Two programs have been launched recently to help offset the daunting statistics. Colorado auto accident attorney, Jennifer Donaldson, explains, “According to the 2011 CDOT crash statistics, last year 41 percent of Colorado’s motor vehicle fatalities involved alcohol-related crashes and 60 percent of vehicle occupants killed were not buckled up. Colorado police have teamed up with CDOT to strictly enforce safety initiatives that aim to counteract the two greatest contributors to traffic deaths in Colorado: not wearing a seatbelt and drunk driving accidents.”

Colorado’s impaired driving program, called the “100 Days of Heat,” runs simultaneously with the national DUI campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” Over 90 law enforcement agencies and the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) plan to increase DUI patrols between Friday, August 17 and Tuesday, September 4. At least ten sobriety checkpoints will be situated throughout the state.

“The ’100 Days of Heat’ DUI crackdown is the most intensive DUI enforcement of the summer,” says Denver DUI accident lawyer Jennifer Donaldson. “Officials are expected to continue high DUI enforcement through Labor Day weekend and will also be on the lookout for unbuckled drivers and passengers.”

According to the CDOT website, since the campaign launched Memorial Weekend, Colorado law enforcement agencies have made over 1,301 DUI arrests. This year’s aggressive seatbelt enforcement stemmed from last year’s increase in the number people killed in traffic crashes without seatbelts, which was the first increase in a decade. During the 2012 national “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which lasted from May 21 to June 3, law enforcement agencies across the state issued an astonishing 8,777 seat belt citations to drivers.

“To our public servants, getting drivers and passengers to buckle up is the most effective way to save lives and prevent car accident injuries.” Jennifer Donaldson continues, “DUI related accidents and not wearing your seatbelt can result in personal injuries with tremendous costs such as wage loss from inability to work, mounting hospital bills and other damages. If you think about it, a ticket is a small price to pay to avoid even greater losses such as these.”

Question by Hansel: How do I apply for a “waiver of exclusion” needed to enter Canada with a DUI on my record?
I have a vacation scheduled to Canada at the end of the month, but I have heard that Canada doesn’t let tourists enter with a DUI on their record. I found a loophole called a “waiver of exclusion”, but I have no idea how to apply for it. I have tried calling several different consulate general offices, but they just transfer me to a recording that gives information about their website. Does anyone know how to speak directly with a consulate general, or if there is another way to apply for this?
I forgot to mention that the DUI was only a few months ago, so I have not yet reached the five-year waiting period required to apply for rehabilitation. At this point, my only option is to apply for the “Waiver of Exclusion”, but I am having trouble finding how to apply for this.

A. Convictions/offences outside Canada

If you were convicted of or committed a criminal offence outside Canada, you may overcome this criminal inadmissibility

* by applying for rehabilitation, or
* you may be deemed to have been rehabilitated if at least ten years have passed since you completed the sentence imposed upon you, or since you committed the offence, if the offence is one that would, in Canada, be an indictable offence punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of less than ten years.

If the offence is one that would, in Canada, be prosecuted summarily and if you were convicted for two (2) or more such offences, that period is at least five (5) years after the sentences imposed were served or to be served.

Yes, those shows will record just fine. Your DVD recorder might refuse to record premium channels and pay per view but it’ll record everything else.
