In 2012, an estimated 36,200 people nationwide died in motor vehicle accidents. Thats 4.6 percent more or 1,600 more deaths compared to 2011, according to a report published by the National Safety Council on Feb. 19.

In recent years, texting while driving has become a common cause of car accidents, Acker said. Distracted driving, speeding and drunk driving also are common contributing factors in accidents.
