Nassau County Crime Lab Error Leads to Inmate’s Release
MINEOLA — A Hempstead man who served close to two years in prison on a felony drug charge was freed due to an error by the now-shuttered Nassau County Crime Lab. Court documents stated that most of the cocaine Nwakanma Ochei allegedly possessed after a 2009 arrest went missing after the drugs were retested. Ochei was charged with possession of 1.696 grams; only .39 grams were found. Under New York law, one must possess at least .55 grams to be charged with a felony. Ochei was recharged with a misdemeanor, released on September 21 and credited with time served.
