Attorney Michael J. Engle Speaks on Federal Grand Jury Practice

Michael J. Engle, partner at Greenblatt, Pierce, Engle, Funt & Flores, LLC, participated as a panel member at a session entitled Controlling the Flow of Information: Defense Counsels Role in Federal Grand Jury Practice at a recent CLE event hosted by the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (PACDL). The panel discussed the important procedural, statutory and Constitutional protections for the testifying witness. The panelists also discussed representation of the client who receives a subpeona duces tecum and provided an update on the case law on “taking the Fifth.”

One of Philadelphias top criminal defense lawyers, Michaels practice has included cases ranging from typical state court matters to complex white-collar investigations and prosecutions. He has handled numerous cases in state and federal courts throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. His clients include individuals, professionals, public officials, as well as corporate clients.

As a recent Past President of the PACDL, Michael has also represented the interests of criminal defense attorneys throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Currently, Michael serves as the co-chair of PACDLs white-collar practice committee and as the Vice-Chair of the Philadelphia Chapter of PACDL. In 2011, he was elected a Fellow of the prestigious American Board of Criminal Lawyers.

Michael frequently lectures at seminars for both attorneys and judges on criminal law, criminal procedure and advanced trial strategy. He is a published author of three academic articles in the fields of sociology and criminology, and he is also a frequent lecturer at Villanova University where he speaks on serial murder. Attorney Marc S. Kohnen a Semi-Finalist for the San Diego Daily Transcripts Top Attorneys List

Attorney Marc S. Kohnen has had the honor of being selected as a semi-finalist for the San Diego Daily Transcripts list of 2013 Top Attorneys for the category of criminal defense. According to the publications website, this listing identifies the top-tier attorneys within San Diego County, California who work in the in private, corporate, government and academic practice. Peer voting is used to make the selections.

The news publications website notes that it received more than 800 nominations for attorneys who practice within 15 categories that were pre-selected by the publication. Those who are recognized as Top Attorneys must not have any previous disciplinary actions on their records, and they 0must be properly licensed and in good standing with the California State Bar.

Even though Attorney Kohnen was not a finalist for the Top Attorneys list, he still reached the notable achievement of being a semi-finalist. According to the San Diego Daily Transcript, only the top 25 nominated attorneys within each category receive this distinction. All semi-finalists are subject to peer voting. Only attorneys who rank in the top 10 get to be finalists in the publications list. The San Diego Daily Transcript, which is available both in print and electronically, covers business news and events in the San Diego area.

Attorney Kohnen graduated from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego in 2006. Before that, he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1999. While he was in laws school, Mr. Kohnen had the opportunity to work as a law clerk at one of the most prominent San Diego criminal defense law firms. this is what happened to a friend and the attorney that stood in had a warrant issued. how can a stand in attorney, without clients permission, do that and it be ok?

I’m not at all positive but my guess is that, GENERALLY, it’s ok. Clearly, however, your friend must discuss this with his attorney to get it straightened out.
